Q:   When will my Medicare benefits start?
A:   Medicare benefits typically begin the first day of the month following enrollment.

Q:   When can I enroll in supplemental insurance plans to fill Medicare’s coverage gaps?
A:   The Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage, “Medigap” and Part D drug plans are same as the Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare.

Q:   Will there be penalties if I don’t enroll in Medicare before my 65th birthday?
A:   No, your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before your birth month and ends three months after your birth month. Premium and coverage penalties may apply if you don’t enroll within three months of your 65th birthday.

Q:   Will there be penalties if I’m over 65 and don’t enroll in Medicare Part B before my employer health plan ends?
A:   No, the Special Enrollment Period for people who delayed Medicare Part B because of employer health coverage, ends eight months after their employer health coverage stops. Same for related Medicare Advantage, “Medigap” and Part D drug plans.
